EMERGENCY INTERVENTION IN CHILDREN

Why do children’s teeth hurt and how to stop the pain until you go to the dentist?

The causes of toothache in children are tooth fractures due to caries, deep cavities and movement of loose teeth between two teeth. If the cause is jamming due to a breakage between two teeth, the painful area should be immediately cleaned with floss and brushed. If there is swelling, a cold compress should be applied to the cheek. Cold reduces pain, but heat application increases inflammation and pain. If there is pain due to loosening of the tooth, the child has the tooth extracted as soon as possible.

What should I do if my child gets injured in his mouth and teeth as a result of a fall?

First of all, before intervening with the child, it is necessary to remain calm and not say, “Oh, this is bleeding.” Bleeding scares the child even more.

Do a general check of the teeth and try to find any missing or broken tooth parts. If the piece is too small, do not waste time trying to find it, your problem will be solved with filling. Keep the piece you find in saliva or milk under the tongue and report it to your doctor.

Stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the bleeding area with clean cotton, gauze or napkin for 1-2 minutes.

An attempt is made to eliminate the risk of infection by cleaning the injured area with warm water.

DENTAL IMPLANT

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed in the jawbone to replace the missing tooth or teeth in order to obtain the function of the natural tooth. These systems, which have been used for years, are treatment methods that offer a comfort close to natural teeth without damaging your remaining teeth and, contrary to popular belief, are not very troublesome.

These implants support an artificial tooth under a single-tooth crown, bridge, or removable denture. Traditional bridges are still a good treatment option. However, many people have to have their healthy teeth adjacent to the toothless area cut off while the bridge is being built, and they lose these teeth over time. In such cases, a single tooth implant to replace the missing tooth would be an ideal option.

DENTAL HEALTH IN INFANCY

It is important that the foundations of oral and dental health are laid in a controlled manner starting from infancy. Preventive methods and physician examination are important during the primary dentition period because they act as a guide for the permanent teeth that will replace the primary teeth. During childhood, newly erupted permanent teeth must be kept healthy. There is a direct relationship between individuals’ general health status and oral health.

How to take oral and dental care in babies?

Cleaning should begin as soon as your baby’s first tooth erupts. For this purpose, gauze and a soft toothbrush can be used, or teeth can be cleaned using parent finger covers.

Initially, babies’ food source is milk, whether from the mother’s breast, bottle, or both. Cow’s milk has higher calcium, phosphorus and protein content than human milk, and cow’s milk contains 4% lactose, compared to the 7% lactose found in breast milk. In addition, the buffering capacity of breast milk is very low.

In conclusion, both breast milk and cow’s milk have the potential to promote developmental caries and may cause early childhood caries when given without daily oral care.

TEMPORAMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDERS

Temporamandibular joint disorders

If you experience ongoing pain in the area near your ear, jaw or the muscles on the side of your face, possibly accompanied by a clicking and clicking sound or limited jaw movement, you may be suffering from TMD, short for Temporomandibular disorders. TMD describes a group of conditions characterized by pain and dysfunction of the TMJ and/or surrounding muscles. It’s not always easy to figure out exactly what’s causing these symptoms, but the good news is that most cases of TMD can be resolved with some home remedies.

The two TMJs that connect your lower jaw to the temporal bone on each side are actually very complex joints that allow for three-dimensional movement. The lower jaw and temporal bone come together as a ball and socket with a cushioning disc between them. Large pairs of muscles in the cheeks and temples move the lower jaw. Any of these parts, the disc, the muscles, or the joint itself, can be the source of a TMD problem. If you are in pain or have difficulty opening or closing your jaw, we will perform a thorough examination to identify the problem area and recommend appropriate solutions.

In 2024, he successfully completed his “PhD thesis” titled “In Vitro Investigation of Removal Times of Lithium Disilicate Crowns of Different Thicknesses and Pulp Temperature Changes During Removal with Er:YAG Laser” and received his doctorate degree.

He has participated in various certificate programs in the field of Prosthodontics. He is a member of the Turkish Prosthetics and Implantology Association (TPID) and continues his academic studies by closely following scientific developments and congresses in this field. Some of his interests in his expertise are; Zirconia full ceramic crowns, laminate veneers, commonly implant supported FPDs and Dental or implant supported removable prostheses, Maxillofacial prostheses, Temporomandibular joint disorders and bruxism.

He has 2 articles titled “A Preliminary Study in Er:YAG Laser Debonding of Lithium Disilicate Crowns: Laser Power Setting vs Crown Thickness” and “Er:YAG laser removal of lithium disilicate crown: removal time and pulpal temperature change”. He has been published in valuable SCI-E indexed journals and has many oral and poster presentations presented at various congresses.

Dr. Hakan Ocak

Hakan Ocak graduated from Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Dentistry in 2006. In the same year, he started his doctoral studies at Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2009, Dr. continued his education as an observer researcher at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in the United States. Ocak specialized in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for six months. In 2012, he successfully completed his doctoral education with his thesis titled “Shortening of Jaws with Shrinkage Osteogenesis”, supported by Tübitak Institute, and was entitled to receive a certificate of expertise.

Appointed as an Assistant Professor at Erciyes University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2013, Dr. Ocak served for three years. He resigned from the civil service in 2015 and established his own practice and continues his professional journey at Bestdent Oral Health Clinic. Dr. has published numerous research articles in both international and national peer-reviewed journals since 2013. Ocak is recognized with various awards both nationally and internationally. He specializes in oral and maxillofacial surgery, advanced implant surgery and treatments, conducts courses, works as a consultant physician and has been an active member of AÇBİD, TAOMS and ITI since 2007.
